• W2086510096 abstract "Abstract Self-diffusion and isotope effect in α-iron have been studied by a serial radio-frequency sputter-microsectioning method with radioactive tracers 55Fe and 59Fe in the temperature range 766–1148 K. Above the Curie temperature the self-diffusion coefficient shows a linear Arrhenius relationship with negligible influence of the short range magnetic spin ordering in contrast to the recent theoretical prediction by Kucera et al. Below the Curie temperature, temperature dependence of the self-diffusion coefficient deviates from the linear Arrhenius relationship owing to the magnetic spin ordering, as has been well recognized. The temperature dependence of the self-diffusion coefficient, D, in the whole temperature range of α-iron across the Curie temperature can be expressed by D = (2.76 +1.42 −1.04 ) × 10 −4 exp [ (250.6 ± 3.8 kjmol −1 [1 +(0.156 ± 0.003)s 2 ] RT ]m 2 s −1 where s is the ratio of the spontaneous magnetization at T K to that at 0 K. The isotope effect coefficient is found to increase by about 30% from 0.46 at 1107 K in the paramagnetic state to 0.60 at 828 K in the ferromagnetic state. This increase cannot be attributed to the increase in the correlation factor but to the increase of the kinetic energy factor. This suggests that the relaxation of the iron lattice around a vacancy in the paramagnetic state is larger than that in the ferromagnetic state." @default.
