- W2086523863 abstract "Single-scattering, radiative transfer, and stochastic models of the average reflection coefficient of a one-dimensional multilayer medium are compared. Both the layer widths and refractive indices of the multilayer are randomized. In the radiative transfer and stochastic models, scattering at the interfaces of the multilayer is approximated as a continuous process which depends on a single parameter, the transport coefficient. Here, we consider two approaches to obtaining values of the transport coefficient appropriate for a multilayer: a stochastic theory and a heuristic argument developed by the authors. In the latter approach, an effective transport coefficient is derived from the intensity reflection coefficient of a single layer. This method accounts more accurately for coherence which survives after ensemble averaging. Comparison with numerical solutions demonstrates that the heuristic transport coefficient more accurately describes the reflectivity of a multilayer than the existing stochastic theory." @default.
