- W2086543858 abstract "Abstract The idea of the fourth age of life is introduced as a worldwide challenge and a society‐wide revolution. Longevity is newly defined as the significant extension of peoples’ lives beyond what was normally happening in earlier historical areas. What it does not mean is more opportunity to retire from life into active ill health, or adding years to life in exchange for less health. Attention is drawn to the rise of four‐generation nations in which traditional family patterns are also changing. Discussion focuses on how the fourth age is inventing a new history of society where people transcend the chronological discontinuities imposed on their lives by governmental and conventional age‐controlled periods of productivity and nonproductivity. This new history is one in which more of the elderly population join the work force with their reserve capacity of motivation and energy. Women's numerical preponderance in the fourth age and their changing world view about who they are and what they can do are also seen as having a special impact on the graying of society. These changes include an altered and firmer attitude toward self, and overcoming the stereotypes of the woman as the natural caregiver and supporter of the ill and the elderly. Overall, the fourth age people are beginning to see self‐empowerment as a necessity for survival, and the younger generations are noticing the older person as a ‘survivor’ rather than a ‘victim’ of the hazards of living. This, in turn, is seen as an opportunity for old and young alike to explore, innovate, and prevail." @default.
