Only 25% of the [14C]histamine was present in the soluble cytoplasmic material (i.e., the supernatant fraction collected at 100 000 × g). After pre-incubation with 5.0 μg of non-radioactive histamine per ml, only 9.1–21.0% of the [14C]histamine was present in the large-particulate fraction; more than 60% of the [14C]histamine was found in the soluble cytoplasmic material. [14C]Histamine was lost much more rapidly from cells in which the bulk of the [14C]histamine was located in the soluble cytoplasmic material than from cells in which the bulk of the [14C]histamine was located in the large-particulate fraction. Thus, there appeared to be an association between the subcellular distribution of [14C]histamine and the rate at which the amine is lost from the cell. These findings are related to previous studies on the compartmentation of amines in neoplastic mast cells in culture." @default.
