- W2086679036 abstract "During the nineteenth century, a good part of the romantic criticism fed itself on the rediscovery of the «grotesques»: Nerval, Philarete Chasles, Saint-Marc Girardin, Nodier, Sainte-Beuve, Gautier and some others wanted to exhume these writers condemned by Boileau, and to find out a truth buried beneath strata of lies (about Théophile de Viau, for example). Everything leads to believe that this archaeological criticism makes of the «grotesques» the expression of a relativistic vertigo : the deep meditation on the contingency of history and judgments, the classification of «jeunes-France» writers as «poetae minores»... To refuse a normative and theoretical language, this cultural relativism expresses itself in an aesthetic, analogical, polymorphous and metaphorical mode. Nevertheless, because it underlies a narcissistic and anguished obsession about posterity, Nodier, Gautier... feel that such a relativistic bet can not be entirely won." @default.
