- W2087010868 abstract "1. The techniques of cross-spectral analysis have been applied to tremor of the outstretched fingers recorded simultaneously from both hands of eighteen healthy subjects and at repeated intervals in two trained subjects. 2. The coherence between the tremor wave forms of the two hands was negligeable, averaging only about 0.03 in the group of subjects studied. There was no consistent phase relationship between the tremors of the two hands. 3. The observed coherence between hands rarely exceeded the spurious coherence inevitable in statistical analysis of a finite sample. 4. The absence of significant coherence between the tremor wave forms of the two hands is incompatible with the hypothesis that tremor arises from a common source such as cardiac thrust, or from a single tremor “pacemaker” in the central nervous system. 5. There was a significant relationship between the over-all amplitudes of tremor, peak frequencies and relative sizes of peak of tremor of the two hands in the group of subjects studied and usually in the individual. Such similarities are not the result of a common origin for tremor, but suggest that many of the factors affecting tremor act on both arms to the same degree. 1. @default.
