- W2087123931 abstract "An analysis has been made of the shape of a towed boom of logs in which the logs are treated as a continuum which transmits only normal stresses. If the skin friction between the bottom of the logs and the water is assumed to be constant, the shape of the boom is shown to be one of a single-parameter family of elasticas, which are the shapes of highly curved thin beams subjected to opposing end loads. The solution is obtained in terms of elliptic integrals of the first and second kind. The single parameter may be the angle between the boom at the towing point, the non-dimensional width or length of the raft, or the non-dimensional length of the boom, for all these parameters are related to one another. Comparison with model tests in a flume are described and give some support to the theory. A more satisfactory comparison is made with two full-scale measurements which were obtained by surveying and by aerial photography, and these confirm the usefulness of the theory. It is also shown how the specific shape, i.e. the particular member of the family of elasticas, may be related approximately to the depth of logs which are held at the rear of the boom, and which in turn depend on the depth of boom. The theory has been extended to predict: (i) the change of shape of the boom when a second boom is attached to it and towed behind in tandem; (ii) the new shape when a single boom is banded or cinched in order to reduce its width for passage in narrow waters. The shape of the cinching boom is shown to be circular. The analyses may prove to be useful in a number of ways. For example, the total area of the wood under tow can be determined from simple measurements of the boom geometry. The power required to tow the boom at various speeds may be estimated. It would also be possible to determine the best point to cinch a boom to clear a narrow passage subject perhaps to the requirement that the tension in the various portions of the boom should not be increased beyond acceptable limits." @default.
