Conventional chemical analysis is tedious, providing an overall ~mp~ition rather than identi~ing ~nstituents and in practice is not always reliable [2]. Optical microscopic identification via crystal morphology also requires considerable ‘expertise. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) recognizes each crystalline constituent by a line pattern although some organic content may be radiolucent due to low scattering power [l]: the equipment is bulky, expensive and of limited access because of safety regulations. Thermal gravimetry (TG) is better in these respects but results can be equivocal. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) is the most convenient method since compact yet sensitive equipment no longer requires skilled or dedicated operators. Disadvantages include broadness of inorganic absorption bands, which can obscure organic components, matrix dependence of band positions and specimen preparation involving grinding or pelleting which can decompose less stable hydrates. Nevertheless, modem Fourier transform IR instruments allow identification of calculi by detailed comparison with a library of specimens analysed by XRD [3].
