- W2087449375 abstract "Estimations of net soil loss using the caesium-137 (137Cs) technique were carried out in three areas of perceived high erosion hazard. Caesium-137 is a fission isotope distributed in the environment as a result of atmospheric nuclear weapons tests. It becomes rapidly and firmly attached to surface soil material and can be used as a radiotracer of soil movement. Erosion on certain agricultural and silvicultural land in the catchment of South Creek, Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, was determined to be low, with much of the sediment produced being deposited locally. Floodplain sedimentation identified by 137Cs appeared to be related to phases of urbanization in the catchment. From measurements of 137Cs in an established banana plantation near Coffs Harbour, NSW, the average net soil loss rate appeared to be zero. Erosion on perceived ‘fragile’ farmland near Colbinabbin, Victoria, was estimated to be 440kg ha−1 yr−1 on a weighted mean basis. The 137Cs method is thus an effective tool for identifying erosion and sedimentation in environmentally diverse areas in the landscape." @default.
