- W2087492411 abstract "Explaining the how and whyof innovation at the firm level is a primary challenge for researchers.Innovative behavior in firms has been attributed to a variety of dissimilarfactors. Much knowledge remains fragmented because disparate insights are notunified into a theory about innovative behaviors in firms. This paper proposes and tests a structure model to explore, explain, andpredict the innovative behavior of firms. Drawing on social psychology fordecision-making analysis regarding innovation and resistance to change, themodel organizes knowledge from diverse areas to explain and predict theconditions for innovative behaviors of organizations in specific contexts. The model builds on the theory of planned behavior, which is designed tounderstand and predict social behavior regarding a specific action, target, time frame, and context. People's behavior can be explained and predicted interms of intentions, attitudes, subjective norms, and behavior control. Two hypotheses were developed that embody the variables of the model: (1)the firm's innovation willingness can be explained in terms of managers'attitude towards engaging in innovation, perceived social norms to engage ininnovation, and managers' perceived control over the innovation process; and(2) the firm's innovation willingness can be explained in terms of perceptionsof expected social outcomes, economic risk, technological and organizationalcapabilities, and community, market, and regulatory pressure. A model was tested with questionnaire results from 97 firms along the UnitedStates-Mexico border. Empirical results confirm that the model can exploredeterminants of innovative behavior of a firm in specific situations. Theproposed model has three advantageous features: (1) it takes a holisticapproach; (2) it is a definition system that prompts for the inclusion ofnumerous variables; and (3) its theoretical and methodological approachintegrates insights from diverse areas.
