- W2087527248 abstract "Introduction During tests of various modifications of Taylor's determinate inediunl (BM + casein hydrolysate + 3 vitamins; Taylor, 1950) for culturing anthers of Trndescnntia pnlzcdosa (Karl Sax' Clone 5), it was found that when 4 per cent lactose was substituted for the equivalent concentration of sucrose, meiocytes proceeding from diplotene to tetrads usually did not elaborate crosswalls in the tetrads (Fig. 19, 20) (see also Sparrow et nl., 1955, for sin~liar effects of culture in Trillizcm erectzcm anthers). The effect seemed to be greater when ltinetin was present (at a tested concentration of 0.25 ppm.). Because of its possible usefulness in studying the metabolism of crossxvall-formation, preliminary studies of this blockage were nude by adding metabolites of the glycolytic and tricarboxylic acid cycles to the medium as possible wall-precursors. During these tests, consistent anomalies in the results of nuclear division were observed, particularly in the media containing kinetin. In addition, information was desired concerning the chemical nature of the tetrad capsule w h c h forms what might be considered a greatly thickened middle lamella to the microspore walls, and has )been reported in several dicotyledonous genera to be callose (Maheshwari, 1950). Further studies were therefore conducted to determine the cause of the nuclear effects and the nature of the capsule substance. Certain oeneral structural variations of the meiotic products not pre? viously described were encountered in this study. The following new terms have therefore been used: 1. Sy1zcnpsz~l2~7?~: a general term for the encapsulated products of a single microsporocyte, such as monads, diads (Wallter, 1957) and tetrads. This term therefore includes encapsulated meiotic products with other numbers of nuclei and microspores. 2. Z>iarpo?-es: the diploid microspoi.es produced when the products of the first mciotic division proceed directly to microspore forination without the intervention of the second division. 3. Crosswnlls: partitions between the inicrospores without consideration of their subdivision into capsular and cell-wall components." @default.
