- W2087592877 abstract "Prior to the field testing of potential marine antifouling compounds in paint formulations using immersion trial rafts, an initial laboratory screening of the compounds provides a valuable early indication of their efficacy. This paper describes a procedure developed for using zoospores of species of green algae in the important fouling genus Enteromorpha in these screening tests. The widespread, cosmopolitan nature of this genus renders it ideally suitable for bioassay tests at laboratories throughout the world. Aspects of the ecology, distribution, seasonal occurrence, structure and reproduction of members of this genus are described which relate to the procedure for obtaining and isolating zoospores for bioassay tests. The efficacy of a test biocide is determined by recording the effect of dilutions of the biocide on the germination process of zoospores under suitable cultural conditions. The bioassay test is recommended as it utilises common and readily available marine fouling test algae, which are physiologically hardy and easily grown in seawater culture, provides a rapid screening method using simple apparatus and methodology, and assesses the efficacy of the test biocide against the spore stages directly responsible for the colonisation process." @default.
