- W2087808112 abstract "Formaldehyde food has been shown to induce crossing-over in spermatogonial cells of D. melanogaster in the absence of sex-linked lethal mutations and translocations. locations. Tests for viability of the induced crossover chromosomes in homozygous condition showed that 107 out of 114 were viable. In particular, in 11 out of 12 clusters of complementary crossovers both chromosomes were viable. This shows that the observed exchanges between markers were due to true crossing-over and not to translocations between homologous chromosomes. The data provide strong evidence for the assumption that the mechanism producing crossing-over is different from that producing rearrangements; they are also supported by similar conclusions reported in the literature. An explanation for this difference is provided by the new molecular theories on crossing-over, single-strand breaks in DNA being responsible for crossing-over, two-strand breaks for chromosome breaks leading to rearrangements. Single-strand breaks that do not take part in a crossover do not seem able to develop into double-strand breaks that give rise to recessive lethals; the possibility that this might happen as late as the cleavage divisions was excluded by the negative result of a test in which over 100 F1 females from a late brood were tested for gonadic mosaicism for a sex-linked lethal." @default.
