- W2087979417 abstract "The effect of a marginal deficiency of tryptophan per se and in association with deficiency of riboflavin (double deficiency) on cataractogenesis was studied in rats. Both groups of experimental animals had their respective pair-fed controls with a common ad libitum control group. Casein (6%) and gelatin (12%) served as the protein source. The major carbohydrate source was sucrose. Periodic slit-lamp examination revealed the development of mature cataract only in the low tryptophan fed group. The concentrations of tryptophan in plasma and lens from both experimental groups were significantly decreased as compared to their control groups. Total protein content of the lens was also significantly lowered in both the experimental groups as compared to their respective pair-fed and the common ad libitum controls. On the other hand, soluble protein content of the lens was significantly lower in the tryptophan deficient group as compared to the control groups. Further, glutathione reductase (GSH-R) activity both in erythrocyte and lens was significantly lowered and the activation coefficient, AC (ratio of the stimulated activity of GSH-R by in vitro addition of FAD to that in the absence of it) value was significantly elevated in the double deficient group when compared to its controls. However, the riboflavin status was not altered in the low tryptophan fed group. These results suggest that riboflavin deficiency may protect the lens from the cataractogenic effect of a low tryptophan diet." @default.
