- W2088001856 abstract "The urinary bladders of 5% seawater- and freshwater-adapted Gillichthys mirabilis have one-fourth the water permeability of seawater-adapted fish. Water permeability of the seawater-adapted fish bladder is reduced by ovine prolactin treatment for 2 days or by transplantation of pituitary glands or pituitary rostral lobes from freshwater-adapted teleosts. Bladder sodium and chloride reabsorption occur at the same rates in seawater- and hypotonic-environment-adapted animals. Ovine prolactin does not increase sodium uptake. The stimulation of bladder sodium reabsorption by teleost rostral pars distalis transplantation can also be obtained by treatment with ACTH or cortisol; therefore, prolactin does not seem to be responsible for this effect in Gillichthys. The regulation of water and ion movements in Gillichthys urinary bladder in bihormonal. Cortisol can elevate water permeability and stimulate sodium and chloride reabsorption in seawater-adapted fish. Prolactin lowers bladder water permeability." @default.
