Sea water is the source for the mineral ions, but the specific stages of the transport and deposition pathway are not well understood. This study shows that the first-formed mineral is deposited inside intracellular micrometer-size vesicles as solid nanospheres. Surprisingly, the initial deposits are distributed widely inside the embryonic cells, including epithelial cells. The possibility that the whole embryo is geared toward depositing mineral for spicule formation or other purposes, may contribute to the understanding of biomineralization processes in general." @default.
