- W2088642276 abstract "The Cascade System will use one or more LEO satellites equipped with Ka-band storeand-forward transponders to deliver extremely large digital data files, nominally 10’s to 100’s of Gigabytes, to and from anywhere on Earth. The need to account for relatively deep fading due to rain and stringent ITU power density limits have motivated our development of channel simulation and fade mitigation techniques applicable to LEO Ka-band high speed data links. The frequency scaling ratio that relates attenuation at 20 and 30 GHz, and the maximum expected fade slope are the two important parameters that affect the operation of the transmit power control scheme used by the Cascade system to mitigate rain fading. Using a channel simulator based upon: (1) the well-known EXCELL model of horizontal rain structure that was developed by Capsoni et al. (1987) and (2) a method for obtaining the parameters of the EXCELL model from ITU-R rain zone parameters that was developed by Goldhirsh (2000), and by making suitable assumptions concerning temperature, rain drop size distribution, etc., we can obtain reasonable estimates for both of these parameters. This allows us to set allocations for the Ka-band link margins in both directions, and the sampling rates for the transmit power control system." @default.
