- W2088675122 abstract "Electrical stimulation of the unmyelinated afferent fibers in the abdominal vagus nerve of the rabbit causes a reflex rise of blood pressure. This situation has been used to investigate the effect of distal section of the nerve on the efficiency of the synapses made by the afferent fibers in the medulla. Electrical stimulation of the central end of a nerve cut 40–160 days previously elicited a smaller and slower reflex rise of blood pressure at low frequencies of stimulation than did similar stimulation of the control nerve. At higher frequencies of stimulation (25–100/sec) stimulation of the two nerves elicited more nearly equal responses, even after 160 days. Prolonged tetanic stimulation of either nerve reduced the sensitivity of the blood pressure reflex to subsequent stimulation of the control nerve. After prolonged stimulation of the cut nerve, the subsequent response to low frequency stimulation of the cut nerve was maintained or increased. Thus the response to excitation of the cut nerve was increased relative to that of the control nerve by tetanic stimulation, and this improvement lasted from less than 10 min to more than 20 min according to the duration of the tetanic stimulation." @default.
