- W2088740796 abstract "Abstract Characterization of oxygen-implanted polyethylene has been done by combined techniques of SIMS, FT-IR, Raman and ESR. Various aspects of the modified surface are clarified by the probes used. SIMS gave the depth distribution of the implanted oxygen expected by the usual projected range theory. The FT-IR-ATR measurements, with various probing depths using Ge and KRS-5 as IREs with different incidence angles, indicate generation of various functional groups like hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxyl groups in a depth distribution similar to that of oxygen. Raman spectroscopy indicates generation of amorphous carbon in the bulk modified layer, and a very thin diamond-like carbon film on the outermost surface. ESR finds a surprisingly high concentration of around 10 15 spins/cm 2 of fairly stable free radicals. The observed dose dependence and the relaxation times of the radicals give insight into a mechanism of radical generation and extinction." @default.
