- W2088787112 abstract "Upon removal of the lens from the adult newt eye, the dorsal iris transforms into lens. The progressive change occurring in protein synthesis in this system was followed by autoradiography using H3-leucine as the isotope. The ratio between the grain counts per unit area of the regenerating tissue and those of the control (the dorsal iris of the nonoperated eye of the same individual) was used as a measure for enhancement of protein synthesis. The data indicated two phases of increase in the ratio interrupted by a phase of insignificant increase. Also, in the ventral part of the iris of the operated eye, which does not participate in lens formation, an enhancement of protein synthesis was indicated. However, the enhancement was much less in extent and decreased to a lower level with the progress of time. When the ratio of cytoplasmic grains to the total cell grains was calculated for different stages of regeneration in the regenerating system, a continuous increase in the ratio was shown during 5–20 days after lens removal. This increase in cytoplasmic grain ratio was not accompanied by an increase in cytoplasmic area ratio. The data are discussed in connection with immunochemical, electron microscopic, and other autoradiographic data obtained on the same system." @default.
