- W2088908319 abstract "The principal features of the linear relations among CM's recorded with differential electrodes at various stations along the basilar membrane of the guinea-pig cochlea agree well with the relations described by yon Békésy for the traveling wave. However, there are about as many nonlinear as linear relations for these CM's. The CM recorded from upper turns is a nonlinear function of input sound pressure at all input levels for some frequencies, and for high input levels at all frequencies. Interference is a nonlinear phenomenon in which the presence of one tone decreases the amplitude of the CM response to a second tone. Using simultaneous measurements from multiple pairs of differential electrodes, we have found that interference between two tones may be confined to a single turn in the cochlea. Several observations restrict the place of nonlinear interference to the hair cell or to local mechanical phenomena as opposed to over-all hydromechanical patterns or to Békésy's eddies.
