- W2089277595 abstract "Rachel Carson is well known to the general public and environmental scholars for her groundbreaking work, Silent Spring. For this and earlier work on marine ecology, she was named by Life magazine in 1990 as one of the hundred most important Americans of the twentieth century. She received the National Book Award and the John Burroughs Medal for The Sea Around Us and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (posthumously) for Silent Spring. She is credited with making ecology a household word and launching the modern environmental movement. Unquestionably, Rachel Carson was a very significant figure in the explosion of environmental awareness of the 1960s. Following her untimely death in 1964, scholars and colleagues have contributed insights into Carson's life and work from a range of perspectives. Her work has been assessed for its policy impacts (Wang; Hynes, Recurring; Graham, “Rachel Carson”), for its contribution to the environmental movement (Garb; Payne), and for its qualities as nature writing (Stewart, Slovic, Glotfelty). Feminist scholars have used gender to evaluate the response to her work (Hazlett; Corbett; Smith; Norwood, “The Nature of Knowing”; Hynes, “Ellen Swallow” and Recurring); rhetoricians have analyzed her style and arguments (Waddell; Killingsworth and Palmer, “The Discourse” and “Millenial Ecology”; Oravec). Still others have focused on Carson's environmental ethics (Cafaro “Rachel Carson's” and “Thoreau”; Bratton; Moore). The one-hundredth anniversary of her birth saw yet more commemorative volumes on her life's work (Matthiessen; Sideris and Moore)." @default.
