- W2089624603 abstract "Three methods of oestrus detection in commercial dryland dairy herds were tested for accuracy; visual observation by the stockman, visual observation + the use of oestrogen treated steers and the use of tail paint. Evaluation took place in three observation periods on five large herds, comprising 611 cows in total. Weekly samples of blood serum from each cow in the study were assayed for progesterone to verify the accuracy of oestrus detection and the profile was compared with recorded oestrous activity. In all cases, the method of using oestrogen-treated steers + visual observation by the stockman accounted for detection of a significantly larger proportion of cows in oestrus (89%) compared with 77% for each of the other methods. There was no significant difference in calving rate following artificial insemination in each of the periods in which different methods of oestrus detection were used, although the proportion of cows which conceived at a potentially fertile oestrus was higher in four out of five herds when oestrogen-treated steers were used to aid in oestrus detection. Errors of omission were greater when oestrus detection was based on the observations of the stockman alone, whereas the incidence of false-positive diagnosis of oestrus was greater with the use of tail paint. These results suggest that the efficiency of reproduction in dairy herds may be improved by the use of hormone-treated steers, and their advantages are discussed." @default.
