- W2089687550 abstract "This review delineates some of the known associations of infection and anemia. Infections are detailed in which anemia is nearly universal (hookworm disease, malaria, Oroya fever, clostridial sepsis), apparently sporadic and on an immune basis (mycoplasmal pneumonia, latent syphilis and the mononucleosis syndromes), or so occasional as to make causal associations as yet speculative (viral hepatitis, miliary tuberculosis). Current understanding of the mechanism of anemia in acute and chronic infections is outlined. The propensity for genetic (sickle cell anemia) or infectious (malaria, bartonellosis) hemolysis to predispose to salmonellosis is discussed. Balanced polymorphism as an explanation of gene frequency in hereditary diseases which either predispose to infection or to accelerated anemia in the face of infection (sickle cell anemia, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency) is reviewed." @default.
