- W2089745625 abstract "1. Cockroaches can be trained to keep their metathoracic leg out of a solution. Isolated segments learned faster than headless animals, which in turn learned faster than intact animals. 2. Drugs which inhibit RNA synthesis or protein synthesis (actinomycin D, acridine orange, congo red, chloramphenicol, cycloheximide) slow up or inhibit learning. There is a relation between dose of drug injected and the time taken to learn. 3. Drugs such as edrophonium, prostigmine, physostigmine, amphetamine, and magnesium pemolate facilitate learning. There is a relation between dose of drug injected and time taken to learn. 4. There is a difference in the level of incorporation of labelled uridine into the metathoracic ganglion RNA:— Experimental > Control44.18±5.12 per cent.Control > Resting29.45±3.72 per cent.Experimental > Resting68.80±15.88 per cent. 5. Drugs which inhibit learning also inhibit the increased incorporation of labelled uridine. 6. The experimental animals had a 69.35±7.75 per cent greater incorporation of labelled leucine into their metathoracic ganglia than the control animals. 7. Autoradiography showed greater uridine incorporation into the posterior part of the metathoracic ganglion—the region associated with the neurons involved in the flexor response. 8. During learning there is a rapid fall in the ChE activity of the metathoracic ganglion (resting 2.86±0.39; control 2.08±0.15; experimental 1.12±0.06 μM acetic acid per hour per 100 μg. protein). 9. As the ChE level increases over 72 hours so the animal forgets. 10. Some mechanisms for the rapid reduction in ChE activity are considered. 11. The results of the learning experiments are discussed in terms of specific afferent reinforcement, changes in synaptic ratio, and biochemical neuronography." @default.
