- W2089866528 abstract "The purpose of the study was to more fully understand how the messages men internalize related to gender role socialization are associated with depression. As a means of identifying specific masculinity messages associated with depression, 27 depressed and 27 nondepressed men, more than 90% of whom were Caucasian, were compared on their endorsement of individual gender role conflict items. Results indicated that the depressed and nondepressed men differed on many items across the 4 factors of masculine gender role conflict. The discussion focuses on identifying internalized messages that may be associated with the gender role conflict items and highlights clinical issues salient to working with depressed male clients. Cognitive psychotherapy views the source of a client's problems in living as the self-defeating messages of a client to himself or herself (Beck, 1963, 1964; Beck, Freeman, & Associates, 1990; Beck, Rush, Shaw, & Emery, 1979). The foundational premise of cognitive therapy is that when a person experiences psychological disturbance, there is a selective bias in the way he or she processes information. People's cognitive structures develop early in life and are strengthened by experiences that continue to shape those beliefs, values, and attitudes (Beck & Weishaar, 1995). From these experiences, one learns shoulds and musts from important individuals in one's life, observes how others act, and observes what is said about those people. The cognitive structures that one develops from those experiences are, in turn, reinforced through the way in which one interprets one's experiences using these same cognitive structures." @default.
