- W2090010823 abstract "PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome among a clerical workforce whose jobs are considered sedentary. These preliminary data of subjects were completed prior to the implementation of a comprehensive risk factor modification program METHODS: 169 women (39.0+/− 11.0 years) and 88 men (38.8+/− 11.1 years) were recruited to participate in a healthy lifestyle intervention program. Subjects completed a health history questionnaire and the following physiologic variables were measured: blood pressure, height, weight, waist circumference, and fasting blood glucose, cholesterol (high density lipoprotein level [HDL], low density lipoprotein, and total), and triglycerides. These results will be used to determine whether an individual has metabolic syndrome. RESULTS: Of the female and male subjects 15.7 (female) and 42.0% (male) had a systolic blood pressure over 130 mmHg, 32.9 and 51.1% had a diastolic blood pressure greater than 85 mmHg, 11.4 and 19.3% had a fasting blood glucose level greater than 100 mg/dl, and 32.5 and 53.4% had a triglyceride level greater than 150 mg/dl. 59.6% of the women had a waist circumference greater than 85cm and 63.5% of men had a waist circumference greater than 100cm. 50% of women had a (HDL) less than 50 mg/ dl and 64% of the men had an HDL less than 40 mg/dl. 25.4% of women and 53.9% of men had 3 or more risk factors indicative of metabolic syndrome. Note – Due to time constraints adjustments could not be made for medication usage. This would suggest that the actual number of individuals with risk factors is higher. CoNCLUssIoN This data suggests that individuals engaged in sedentary tasks at work are at greater risk for metabolic syndrome than the general public. Additionally, the most prevalent risk factors (abdominal obesity and HDL levels) are also the ones for which medications are largely ineffective and regular physical activity should be a basis of treatment.
