In this paper we describe how this question was answered in the Cooper Basin by using desktop modeling studies and a low‐cost field test. The Cooper Basin in Australia comprises an extensive fluvial reservoir sequence dominated by thick coals that cause severe imaging problems for any seismic (surface or downhole) technique. The modeling studies undertaken consisted of 2D modeling to identify waveform distortion caused by the coals and to determine optimal placement of the downhole geophone toolstring. The field test consisted of a number of perforation shots and string shots in a range of charge sizes being fired and monitored by a 2‐geophone string in an offset well to determine the transmissivity characteristics of the reservoir sequence. The field test demonstrated the ability of the monitoring string to detect events of small (−2.5 to −3) magnitude from a monitoring well 1,500 ft away. Low background noise levels were encountered and, as expected, significant signal attenuation was seen across the coal intervals. The results gave sufficient encouragement to proceed with the full‐ scale project. That full‐scale microseismic project was successful, but is not the subject of this presentation. The testing method described here is applicable to other frontier microseismic areas.Permalink: https://doi.org/10.1190/1.3513263FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 2010ISSN (print):1052-3812 ISSN (online):1949-4645Copyright: 2010 Pages: 4453 publication data© 2010 Copyright © 2010 Society of Exploration GeophysicistsPublisher:Society of Exploration Geophysicists HistoryPublished: 21 Oct 2010 CITATION INFORMATION Alan Waldron, Julie Shemeta, Emmanuel Gaucher, Suzanne Hunt, Dennis Cooke, and Simon Chipperfield, (2010), Not a shot in the dark: Low‐cost demonstration of microseismic feasibility in a high‐risk environment, SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts : 2120-2124. https://doi.org/10.1190/1.3513263 Plain-Language Summary PDF DownloadLoading ..." @default.
