- W20908109 abstract "This chapter discusses the therapeutic situation of Job in the “Book of Job.” The three men who came to be with Job in his suffering came to Job with the express purpose of comforting him. However, the three men gave Job little comfort. When the three men arrived on the scene, they found Job so changed as to be unrecognizable. The three men expressed their sympathy by acting out, in ritual, the inner feelings which they might have attributed to Job. At this stage, the comforters impose neither their consolations nor their strictures upon Job. They keep silent with him for seven days and nights. Job was the first to reveal the thoughts and feelings which in conventional communications remain undisclosed. The value of the comfort, which Job's three friends gave to him was consistently underestimated by Job and by most Bible commentators. But there can be no doubt that the presence of the comforters created a situation for Job pregnant with therapeutic and pathogenic possibilities. Their common religious and ideological heritage is the basis for cohesion. Their separate strivings for individuality and their mutual hostility provide the disruptive element. These are the features which a group therapist utilizes in treatment. The treatment began with their silence, which can be considered as a sympathetic identification with Job's situation. In descriptions of psychotherapy, it is often taken for granted that the therapeutic medium is verbal communication." @default.
