Excitation may be produced by charged and neutral positive ray and electron impact on atoms and molecules. In gas of known local composition, the behaviour of any line or band can be predicted from Boltzmann transport or equivalent theory of the fall space when the collision cross-sections involved are known. Agreement has been found between theory and experiment for Halpha in hydrogen discharges; these were brightest near the negative glow for normal cathode fall (0.19 kV) and in the cathode glow above about 0.5 to 1.0 kV. The intensity distribution through Doppler-displaced Hbeta at c. 1 kV can be mostly accounted for if the projectile particles are Hn+(n=1,2,3) and form unstable Hn+2* in charge exchange collisions with stationary H2 in which there is little transfer of momentum. Minimal transfer of momentum also occurs in positive ray collisions that produce excitation in other gases. The enhancement of lines of neutral atoms in cathode glow spectra of molecular gases does not necessarily indicate a large number density of free atoms, since the excited atoms may be produced by impact of both positive rays and electrons on previously undissociated molecules." @default.
