- W2090908086 abstract "Bacteria-free cultures of 19 strains of T. vaginalis and 5 strains of T. hominis were compared by (i) agglutination of suspensions of living flagellates; (ii) by haemagglutination of sheep cells sensitized with polysaccharides; (iii) by haemagglutination of sheep cells sensitized with cell-free extracts of flagellates. Methods for isolation of bacteria-free strains are discussed. Strains of T. hominis differ among themselves in their nutritional requirements. The media used for different strains are described. Two distinct sero-types were found among five bacteria-free strains of T. hominis. There were no common agglutinogens between the two sero-types. One sero-type of T. hominis had agglutinogens in common with strains of T. vaginalis but could readily be distinguished by absorption tests. It was demonstrated that T. vaginalis is not a homogeneous strain; eight distinct sero-types were found among 19 strains of T. vaginalis isolated. Two strains were found to have changed their antigenic constitution after they had been contaminated with bacteria during a period of 3 weeks. Two strains of T. vaginalis and one strain of T. hominis did not change their antigenic constitution after 68 passages on medium containing homologous serum. Differences in the findings obtained with the three methods used are discussed. Direct agglutination of suspensions of living flagellates and cross-absorption tests are sufficient for distinguishing between different strains. Three strains of T. tenax (not in bacteria-free cultures) showed agglutination with homologous sera; there was no cross-agglutination between T. tenax and any strains of T. hominis and T. vaginalis examined. Two types of antibody were found in specific sera against T. tenax, one which agglutinated living flagellates and one which caused paralysis of flagella." @default.
