Leaf area was distributed unevenly across rows at all times; in late June more than half of the leaf area was found within 10 cm of the center of rows. Light profiles also depended on horizontal position across rows. In July, when less than 5% of outside light flux penetrated to ground at the center of rows, about 70% reached the ground at the middle of the fallow space. More than half of the leaf area was inclined within the range of 0–30°. Leaves on the north side of rows showed a skewed azimuth angle distribution to north and those at the south side to south. Leaves moved according to the sun's position relative to the leaves; more leaves were faced towards the east in the early morning and towards the west in late afternoon. The effects of the uneven leaf-area distribution across rows and of the uneven azimuth-angle distributions on light penetration and canopy photosynthesis were examined with a new computer model. The model was tested with experimental data of sunlit-area profiles, light-flux profiles, and frequency distributions of light-flux density at the leaf surface for cotton and soybean crops. The model predicts that leaf movements following the sun would increase crop-growth rate of cotton by 5% in late June and would diminish the growth rate in early August. The simulations also indicate a potential increase in crop growth with a more even leaf-area distribution." @default.
