- W2091131415 abstract "1864 Maximal lactate steady state (max[lac]SS) may be identified based on breakaways in blood lactate concentration ([lac]) or ventilatory responses. Recent methods include identification of the “lactate minimum”(LM; Tegtbur et al., 1993) or “glucose minimum” (GM; Simões et al., 1996). Estimates of max[lac]SS may be affected by glucose availability(Ivy et al., 1981) and caffeine (Gaesser & Rich, 1985). Our purpose was to determine if glucose availability or caffeine would affect LM or GM. LM and GM were determined in 11 men (mean age 24 ± 3 yr) under 3 conditions: placebo, glucose (75 g, 30 min pre-test), caffeine (5 mg·kg-1, 60 min pre-test). Tests involved an all-out 30-s effort on a mechanically-braked cycle ergometer (Wingate test), an 8-min recovery, and a graded exercise test (GXT) with a fixed pedal cadence (equivalent to 25 km·h-1). In the GXT, resistance (kp) associated with the lowest[lac] and [glu] from samples obtained during the last 30 s of each 3-min stage were recorded as LM and GM. TableTableThere was no effect of the treatments on LM or GM. In addition, there was no effect on RPE at either intensity or on the peak power, mean power, or fatigue index in the Wingate test. It is concluded that ingestion of glucose or caffeine does not affect identification of the max[lac]SS based on LM or GM." @default.
