- W2091173504 abstract "Abstract The role of natural hydrocarbons in the urban environment has received little attention by both researchers and regulators. Though hydrocarbons alone are rarely severe pollutants, their reactivity in the atmosphere to form photochemical smog make them important in air pollution control strategies. It has been estimated that in the United States about 60% of hydrocarbons are from natural sources. Dendroclimatological studies have identified rainfall and temperature as the major climatic controls of tree growth; as such, they can serve as indirect indicators of natural hydrocarbon emissions. Correlations between the level of photochemical oxidants in Washington D.C. and various significant climatic response functions were computed. The highest correlation (0.90) was found between the level of the photochemical oxidants and upwind area average of total rainfall lagged by two years." @default.
