X-ray phase analysis showed that for x ⩽ 0.23 they crystallize with the hexagonal Th2Ni17-type structure and for x > 0.23 they have a rhombohedral structure of the Th2Zn17 type. The temperature dependences of the magnetization and paramagnetic susceptibility indicated that these compounds are ferrimagnetic. The change observed in the molecular magnetic moment of Dy2(Fe1−xAlx)17 on increasing the aluminium concentration is explained by assuming that for x < 0.23 the magnetic moment of dysprosium is constant and equal to 10 10μB but the magnetic moment of iron decreases owing to 3d band filling by aluminium electrons. Perturbations of the magnetic ordering of the dysprosium sublattice occur for x > 0.23." @default.
