- W2091204353 abstract "I first met Mme Denise Albe-Fessard in Italy in 1986, on the occasion of a Congress on Headache in Montesilvano (Pescara), and I think it is no exaggeration to say that the event marked a crucial turning point in my professional life. Until then, I had been an internist with great enthusiasm and interest in pain (visceral pain, in particular), but with an experience only in clinical work and clinical research studies. Mme Fessard introduced me to the fascinating world of basic research and from 1986 onwards we started a collaboration which proved essential for the developing of the lines of research of all my subsequent work. Before we met, Mme Fessard had already worked in the field of pain, but not in the context of visceral and referred pain, while this was the main interest of our research group, directed by Prof. Leonardo Vecchiet. Though an entire new field for her, she immediately became interested in the problem, with the enthusiasm so characteristic of her personality. In the years I spent with her in France at the Laboratory (1987–1989, Groupe de Neurobiologie Appliquée, INRA, in Jouy-en-Josas) and the many months she spent in Italy when she came to visit us in Chieti on several occasions (from 1990 onwards), we worked together on animal models and in patients, studying the pathophysiology and the clinical patterns of referred pains from viscera (Giamberardino et al., 1988; Vecchiet et al., 1989). An important result of our laboratory collaboration was the setting up of an original rat model of referred muscle hyperalgesia from artificial ureteric calculosis, which then became internationally adopted (Albe-Fessard et al., 1990; Giamberardino et al., 1990). It is really thanks to Mme Fessard's help that I was able to approach the basic science aspect of visceral pain phenomena and also to establish my own Laboratory in Italy, once back from the France experience, to continue the experimental work in my own country. Among the various professional experiences we shared in the years of our collaboration it is worth mentioning the joint organization, with Prof. Vecchiet, of the International Congress on “New Trends in Referred Pain and Hyperalgesia” in Chieti (March 1992) and the publication of the relative book (by Elsevier) as joint editors, together with Prof. Ulf Lindblom (Vecchiet et al., 1993). Both the Congress and the book were really successful, greatly renewing the international level of interest in these themes. Throughout the years of our interaction, I learned fundamental scientific lessons from her. The special thing about her was that she always worked with me and did not simply teach me how to work; whether it was at the Lab or at the Hospital, she was always with me to assist in every single phase of an experiment. It was a unique experience. I also remember with enormous pleasure the time when we wrote papers together while being in a sort of “spiritual retirement” in one of her favourite places, her house in Brittany or in Toucan (near Paris). Productive work was combined with intense, fascinating discussions on virtually all aspects of life and pleasant touring of beautiful places in France. Yes, because Mme Fessard not only was a great scientist, but also an extraordinarily complete human being, with lots of intellectual interests, an open mind and a generous, supportive and fair nature. I never remember being bored for a moment in her company; talking to her was always so stimulating that I have rarely had similar interactions with others. After 1996, our opportunities for meeting became less frequent, but we still continued to work on common projects from time to time, such as a book on Pain (edited by Masson) which was published in French and Italian (Albe-Fessard, 1996). Though we were no longer working together in her last few years, we still kept constantly in touch and her death in May 2003 was an enormous loss for me. Mme Fessard was one of those unique people who mark the history of science forever, but also the destiny of other individuals, and for the good: I can truly say I am one of those." @default.
