- W2091229109 abstract "Abstract The effect of bacteriophages T4 and lambda on the ion-permeability of cytoplasmic membrane of E. coli cells has been studied. It has been shown that phage-induced depolarization of the cell membrane is coupled with a simultaneous increase in the transmembrane pH gradient due to activation of the redox H + -pump. Therefore the total value of the proton-motive force remains unchanged at moderate multiplicities of infection. Studies on the temperature dependence have shown that the stimulatory effect of the phage on the activity of the H + -pump takes place at 6°–8° C. Apart from the phages, gramicidin is also able to stimulate the H + -pump under these conditions, while the stimulatory effect of valinomycin is diminished. The stimulatory effect of phages on the H + -pump increased up to a concentration of Na + and K + of 0.1 M . The phage-induced increase in the membrane permeability at low temperatures, taken together with the absence of a saturation effect over a wide range of both K + and Na + concentrations, indicates that ion-channels are formed in the membrane upon the interaction of the host cell with the phages." @default.
