- W2091246452 abstract "303 Aerobic capacity, but not anaerobic metabolism, may increase in specific adult population groups exposed to high altitude. Whether these adaptations occur in early childhood is uncertain. Maturation factors in strength, power, endurance and flexibility, and their interrelationships is unknown among children. The objective of this study was to determine baseline values for 15 selected fitness and performance variables among 12 to 16 year old male and female students residing at 3,700 M. Differences in sex and age among these variables were determined and compared to Physical Best norms. Relationships among these variables were compared to previously published data. Male and female students (150) from LaPaz, Bolivia, between 12-16 years of age participated in this study. There were significant differences between sexes for most variables. The exception was vertical jump. No difference was observed until 15 years of age (males > females). Average vertical jump varied between 19-22 cm, well below norms in the US population. Body fat of males and females fell into the ôgoodö category according to Going et al. (JOPERD, 1992) and increased with age. Endurance performance (mile run) compared favorably to NSPFS norms with females exceeding the Physical Best standards by 40%. Flexibility was significantly lower for shoulder and lumbar extension. Few relationships were significant. However, % fat, hand grip and heart rate during a three minute step test predicted mile run with moderate strength (r=.7). It appears that most fitness and performance measures compared favorably to norms of adolescents living at sea level with the exception of reduced vertical jump." @default.
