- W2091249219 abstract "Abstract This study evaluated changes in patterns of nutrient accumulation as fallowed land is brought under conventional and no-tillage agriculture. Nutrient uptake (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) by grain sorghum, rye, and weeds was compared among conventional tillage, no-tillage, and old-field ecosystems. Elemental uptake was related to litter decomposition, soil chemistry and nutrient leaching. Data were collected from June 1978 through April 1980. From the 1978–1979 to the 1979–1980 period, nutrient accumulation, overall, decreased in both cropping systems. In 1979, sorghum grain yields were significantly greater ( P ⩽ 0.01) in no-tillage systems. Nutrient accumulation by sorghum in the old-field system was, for most elements (except Ca), approximately twice that of conventional and no-tillage systems. It was concluded that nutrient cycling processes in no-tillage systems were similar to those in the old-field system, indicating that no-tillage systems retained some of the nutrient conservation mechanisms thought to exist in natural or less disturbed ecosystems." @default.
