- W2091278013 abstract "This collection is divided into four parts that are subdivided into three chapters, followed by a response by a fourth author who offers an overall perspective on the particular theme. Some of the contributors are medieval historians and others are postcolonial theorists, the result of a conscious effort to promote interdisciplinary synergy. The editors write in the introduction that the essays focus on the overall question of “what happens to the idea of the medieval… and what kind of work does it do, when considered from perspectives outside Europe—from places as diverse as Mexico, West Africa, India, the United States, Lebanon, Australia, South Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, or Japan?” (p. 1). They rightly point out that the notion of the “medieval,” when applied to non‐European cultures, was exceedingly complex. At times it was used as an indirect justification for colonial powers who cast themselves in the role of leading these societies from their “medieval” past into the sunshine of modernity. But medievalism was also used by conquered peoples as a tool of resistance against colonizers, especially by intellectuals leading their own peoples into the modern world by advocating freedom from a medieval past. Even in Europe, the line between what is “medieval” and what is “modern” is so blurred as to be unhelpful in terms of understanding the past. There is much that is modern in the medieval, and much that is medieval in the modern. In fact, there are many medievalisms." @default.
