- W2091288200 abstract "Every mucosal surface of the body has the capacity to produce an immunological response to potentially harm ful external agents, and the intestine has an outstanding primary role in host defence. In terms of the sheer bulk of its lymphoid tissue, it is the largest immunological organ of the body. The surface of its lymphoid aggregates is covered by specialized epithelium, including the microfold (M) cells, which sample both the particulate and the soluble antigens that are present in the lumen. Tar gan et al. [I] have summarized the processes by which M cells present antigen to the underlying macrophages and trigger both T cell and B cell activity, resulting in the release of a number of products including secretory immunoglobulin (Ig) A (see Fig. 1). Antigen-activated Peyer’s patch T and B cells proliferate either within the lymphoid patch or during migration to the mesenteric lymph nodes. These cells migrate to the lymphatits and reach the bloodstream through the thoracic duct. The termmally differentiated cells finally seed themselves back into various mucosal lymphoid tissues, including the lamina propria, which contains several immune and inflammatory effector cell types." @default.
