- W2091295438 abstract "Abstract In this study, elementary teachers and parents from two cultural groups, Middle Eastern and White Other, were surveyed regarding their views on standardized testing. The views of teachers of grades 3 to 5 were also compared with those of grades kindergarten to 2. The responses of teachers (n= 159) and parents (n=134) on the uses of standardized testing, ways to increase test scores, year-to-year changes in test scores and amount of personal and child stress were compared. While similar on several aspects, teachers and parents overall differed in their views of the uses of standardized testing. Parents supported the use of standardized tests to compare teachers, schools, school districts and administrators, while teachers opposed such uses. Teachers, unlike parents, reported considerable personal stress and some child stress due to standardized testing. These findings were particularly strong in teachers of upper grade children. Differences in views were also attributed to cultural differences. The findings of this study suggested the importance of balancing the need for accountability with the need for culturally fair, multiple, alternative assessment measures." @default.
