- W2091350470 abstract "Most contemporary urban studies by U.S. geographers recognize the significance of city site, morphology, and evolution of growth but say little in real terms except to acknowledge that these considera tions exist. The concentration of these writers in urban geography focuses on such items as functional classification of cities, delimita tion of central business districts, land use mapping and techniques, determination of a city's spheres of influence, location of central places, urban hierarchies, patterns of circulation within the city, and so forth. Aerial photographs provide means by which researchers and instructors in urban geography can readily obtain materials to demonstrate or pursue city site and morphology studies. The accompanying list of vertical aerial photographs of major United States cities has been digested from a longer listing of C.B.D. photos of the 100 largest cities in the United States prepared by and available from this writer. The photographs are readily available, cheap, and can be obtained for various dates should historical cover age be desirable. Enlargements up to 40 x 40 can be obtained at moderate cost. The photographs are highly useable to portray several significant aspects of U.S. urbanization, all of which are visually apparent even if not directly explainable. Among the more important are site, pattern and orientation of the street grid, areal extent of the city, relative size of the central business district therein, original center of the city and paths of expansion therefrom, relative position of urban functional areas, blocks to urban expansion, the hopelessness of previously existing street arrangements to cope with changing transportation technology, and the paths and effects of modern free ways constructed to alleviate resulting automobile congestion. The categories of city types within the overall listing result from a rather perfunctory visual examination of the photos and in no way should be construed as a considered meaningful classification. The reasoning for inclusion of a particular city in one of the categories may be specious, and some cities could be placed in several cate gories." @default.
