- W2091521973 abstract "Guillaume Dufay's Latin song-motet 0 beate Sebastiane is transmitted in two choirbooks: Bologna, Civico Museo Bibliografico Musicale, Q15 (henceforth BL) no.311, fs.314v-315r; and Modena, Biblioteca Estense, a.X. 1.11 (Lat.47 1) (henceforth ModB), fs.58v-59r (illus. 1, 2). The music and text transmitted in the two sources differ considerably with respect to accidentals but are otherwise almost identical (exx.2, 3).' Apart from the accidentals, the main differences between the sources that might result in divergent performances concern some features present in ModB, but lacking in BL, namely the fermata over the penultimate note in the tenor, the double final note in the contratenor, and, more importantly, the texting of the two lower voices. It is possible, however, that even these differences might disappear in performance. Regardless of whether the fermatas in ModB invited performers to make an unmeasured slowing down of the marked notes, to embellish them, or to undertake some other action, it is likely that musicians reading from BL would do something of the same sort at the corresponding spot; they are invited to do so, in any case, by the sign over the penultimate note of the contratenor.2 Similarly, the double final note in the contratenor in ModB might conceivably have indicated the conventional alternative conclusions of the cadence. And the lack of text in BL would not necessarily prevent the tenor and contratenor from adding it on cues from the superius (and perhaps even breaking some longer notes into two shorter ones in the process, in the same way that the tenor in ModB does in bars 25, 34-5 and 43).3 They would certainly not be prevented from doing so by their ligatures. To be sure, in ModB many of these ligatures are broken into single notes because of the texting (for instance, those of the tenor at bars 8-10, 22-4, 26, 30-31, 33-5, 36-7 and 38-9), but some are left intact, even though they have to accommodate several syllables of the text (see, for example, the contratenor in bars 25-6 and elsewhere).
