The decision, however, does not seem really so simple. Many men have contributed important ideas in the growth of this subject as we know it today, and the credit given seems to have depended largely on the particular interest of each writer. I have, there-fore, made an attempt to show the source of each successive new idea in this field, without in general including confirmatory work, important though that may have been.
