- W2092007681 abstract "1181 Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic drug commonly found in cold and allergy medications. Controversy has surrounded its therapeutic use during national and international athletic competition. Several studies have produced equivocal results concerning the ergogenic effect of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride use during exercise. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of a therapeutic dose of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride on reaction time and selected exercise tasks. METHODS: Eighteen active male and female college students (VO2peak = 47.6 ± 9.7 ml·kg−1·min−1) volunteered to participate in a double-blinded cross-over designed study. Subjects ingested either a 60mg pseudoephedrine hydrochloride capsule (TRE) or a placebo (PLC). Following a 60 minute rest period, resting heart rate (RHR) and blood pressure (RBP) values were recorded. Each subject participated in the following exercise tasks: 1) Visual Reaction Time (VRT); 2) Auditory Reaction Time (ART); 3) Margaria-Kalamen Stair Climbing Test (MKS); 4) Standing Vertical Jump (SVJ); and 5) VO2peak Treadmill Test (VO2peak). RESULTS: There were no significant differences between TRE and PLC for any variables measured (p>0.05) except SVJ (TRE = 17.3 ± 4.3; PLC = 16.6 ± 4.5 inches, p = .02), RHR (TRE = 74.1 ± 13.9; PLC = 65.6 ± 11.2 beats·min−1, p = .0048), VO2peak at 3 min HR (TRE = 113.1 ± 11.8; PLC = 107.1 ± 12.8 beats·min−1, p = .0012), and VO2peak at 6 min HR (TRE = 136.4 ± 13.8; PLC = 131.7 ± 13.0 beats·min−1, p = .0078). CONCLUSIONS: Within the parameters of this study, a therapeutic dose of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride does improve vertical jump scores and elicits higher submaximal heart rates during the first two stages of a graded exercise treadmill test (Bruce Protocol)." @default.
