- W2092010109 abstract "Almost all institutional imperatives on training in large Malaysian businesshouses or corporations map onto English as the traditional normativelanguage of choice. This paper, which is an ethnographic account of thesociolinguistics of code and style choice in the oral presentations of two suchbusiness organizations, reports on the ascendancy of localized forms andpatterns of communication in the situated discourse of the workplacesettings. This phenomenon clearly points to the localization of English asevidence for the acculturation of English by Malay and other languagesin Malaysian workplace interactions. Aspects and features of MalaysianEnglish (ME) as the localized variety are discussed and presentedin relation to a critique on research to date on ME. The paper demonstratesthat ME and other ways of speaking in these Malaysian corporate businesscontexts contrast with the norms of standard English usage. Thus thenormative view of language choice and modelling for such contexts of arealcommunication, which have long been viewed as bastions of Englishlanguage use in Malaysia, is being challenged." @default.
