Onychomycosis represent less than 50% of ungula pathology. Dematophytes (Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes interdigitale) are the main agents found on feet. Yeasts from Trichosporon genus and specially Candida (Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis,), are predominant on hands and very often associated to ungula disease and perionyxis. Fungus other than the classic dermatophytes and yeasts can be rarely isolated from nail diseases. Among them, species belonging to Scopulariopsis, Aspergillus and Fusarium genus are mainly found but their pathological implication must be proved. Other fungi, presenting a special affinity to keratin (pseudodermatophytes), such as Neoscytalidium (Scytalidium) genus, are found in tropical and subtropical areas and are considered as real pathogens isolated from nail diseases. The same remarks can be attributed to Onychola canadensis, found in tempered or cold countries and responsible of feet onyxis in adults. The role of the laboratory is to identify the species of the fungus isolated from nail diseases and to show its real pathological implication." @default.
