- W2092093635 abstract "A comparison between the NE-directed Negev and Palmyra foreland monoclines of the Syrian Arc shows strong similarity in both their statigraphy and Late Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonic history. A first phase of simple folding in the Senonian was followed by a phase of reverse faulting in the Miocene and ended with a phase of post Miocene uplift in the style of fault-bend fold. This triple deformation of the north Arabian subplate was contemporaneous with the thrusting of the Tauros-Zagros zone. The NE-SW direction of the Syrian Arc as well as many other structures on the African and Arabian plates are an inherited ancient feature, predating any contact with the Eurasian plate. The continental drift proposed for Turkey and Arabia is reviewed and rejected for both. The amounts of horizontal displacement of the Dead Sea Rift and the east Anatolian fault are estimated to be 45 and 27 km, respectively. It is suggested that the stress system upon the Levant has been NW-directed since the Late Cretaceous to the present time. The Dead Sea Rift N-S stress direction is a local post Miocene response to limited regional shift and to intense uplift." @default.
