- W2092247067 abstract "Total-body X-radiation of most laboratory mammals is immediately followed by a period of anorexia and weight loss, the degree and duration of which (in the rat at least), are dependent on radiation dosage (1, 2). Since widespread tissue damage and repair accompany the anorexia and weight loss, it seemed to us that if foodstuffs were provided (by force-feeding, subcutaneous injection, etc.) for energy and synthesis during this period, and if they were utilized, recovery might be hastened and mortality reduced. The present paper is concerned with attempts to determine whether this can be demonstrated. Note is also made of an experiment in which force-feeding was carried out during a second period of anorexia which starts on the tenth to twelfth day after exposure of the rat to lethal dosages of X-rays (1). The results of these experiments have previously been presented in summary form (3)." @default.
